Synopsis:
“It all started with the accident. The one that caused Sophie’s dad to walk out of her life. The one that left Sophie’s older sister, Meredith, barely able to walk at all.
With nothing but pain in her past, all Sophie wants is to plan for the future—keep the family business running, get accepted to veterinary school, and protect her mom and sister from another disaster. But when a hurricane forms off the coast of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and heads right toward their island, Sophie realizes nature is one thing she can’t control.
After she gets separated from her family during the evacuation, Sophie finds herself trapped on the island with the last person she’d have chosen—the reckless and wild Finn Sanders, who broke her heart freshman year. As they struggle to find safety, Sophie learns that Finn has suffered his own heartbreak; but instead of playing it safe, Finn’s become the kind of guy who goes surfing in the eye of the hurricane. He may be the perfect person to remind Sophie how to embrace life again, but only if their newfound friendship can survive the storm.”
This beautiful and touching story of surviving a hurricane has become one of my favorite summer reads. It was impossible to put down and perfect for digesting in one sitting full of SO MANY FEELS. This story is packed full of heart, emotion, and enough hope to make your heart swell.
McCall Hoyle completely and perfectly captured the terrifying feeling of being stuck in a hurricane. Her story was incredibly atmospheric. At times I could feel the cold rain on my skin and I would wince along with the characters. It is simply impossible to not be sucked into this story. I was instantly connected to Sophie and Finn’s survival story and rooted for them the entire way through. Their journey was enjoyable to explore and I loved watching the way their bond changed as the hurricane did. It was realistic, raw, and written with incredible talent.
Although there was a little bit of romance in there, it wasn’t the focus of the story. It really is a story of heartbreak, growth and survival . . . however . . . the romance was pretty sweet. I would definitely enjoy reading a novella or even something more about Sophie and Finn to see how everything turns out for them down the road. More than anything it was incredible to me to watch them power through something so terrifying together. It was inspiring and truly touching.
The writing in this book was so easy to get lost in. It made the story feel truly alive, which was a huge part of its magic. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it! It would be a fantastic summer read that is sure to keep you up while you try to devour the last few chapters!
Favorite Quotes
“Once upon a time, I believed in fairy tales. Not anymore. If Prince Charmings and happily-ever-afters were real, I’d have a godmother and a fancy dress. Instead, I’ve got a pitchfork and a pile of horse manure.”
“I sigh as the sun rises off to the east over the Atlantic. Swirls of pink and orange mingle with the occasional wispy cloud, kissing the gray-blue water where they meet on the horizon. The brushstrokes of color take my breath away.”
“A corner of the moon peeks through a slit in the clouds, like some prophetic spotlight shining on his face- his smiling face. He doesn’t just smile. He beams, basking in the moment.”
About the Author
McCall Hoyle writes honest YA novels about friendship, first love, and girls finding the strength to overcome great challenges. She is a high school English teacher. Her own less-than-perfect teenage experiences and those of the girls she teaches inspire many of the struggles in her books. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s spending time with her family and their odd assortment of pets—a food-obsessed beagle, a grumpy rescue cat, and a three-and-a-half-legged kitten. She has an English degree from Columbia College and a master’s degree from Georgia State University. She lives in a cottage in the woods in North Georgia where she reads and writes every day.
