I find it surprisingly difficult to find bookish siblings that are actually well written. Its. So. Frustrating! More often than not the sibling dynamic feels off which always makes me want to throw my book across the room. Siblings are such an important part of life and I’m so tired of that relationship not being well portrayed in books. So, without any more delay, here are my top favorite fictional siblings;
1. The Song Girls from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
It’s not a secret that I LOVE this trilogy with all of my heart… and one of the big reasons why is because of the bond between the Song girls. All three of them are individual in their own ways. Margot is smart and responsible. Lara Jean is like a soft pastel aesthetic come to life. Then Kitty is a heathen with a sweet side. These three have the best written sister dynamic I have ever read! Jenny Han captured them perfectly, especially the whole “Wow I’m really mad at you but I’m going to help you anyways” deal.
2. The Grants from Save The Date
If you haven’t read Save The Date, I will forcibly push it towards you until you do. This AMAZING book seems to be very absent in the online book community which is such a bummer. The large family in this book (full of five siblings and their parents) has a humorous dynamic that had me awkwardly laughing out loud. I got a lot of weird looks while reading this book for that reason. It has some of the best humor I have EVER read before. The five siblings (Danny, Mike, Linnie, J.J., and Charlie) have the most complicated and realistic bonds. They’re like a bunch of tangled headphones all together in a huge mess that makes this story something you can fly through in a day. If I haven’t convinced you to read this already, than this quote from J.J. Grant should do the trick;
“J.J. scoffed. But just as he’d done ever since he’d read this phrase when he was twelve, he said the word “scoff” instead of just making the sound, and none of us had been able to convince him this actually wasn’t correct.”
3. Lada and Radu from And I Darken
Lada and Radu make this list easily because of how odd and twisted their relationship is. Radu is constantly desperate for Lada’s love and approval whilst she is cold hearted and indifferent. Their rivalry like relationship is one of the only reasons I enjoyed this book. Radu was like a little puppy who I just wanted to hug and comfort because Lada could be such a jerk! Plus once you throw in that Radu and Lada were in the weirdest love triangle to exist yIou’ve got the weirdest sibling dynamic to exist.
4. Feyre, Elain and Nesta from A Court of Thrones and Roses
Honestly, in the beginning of ACOTAR I despised Elain and Nesta with all my heart. How could either of them be so selfish and careless to let their sister go almost die in the woods everyday just so they’d get by. Then when they appear again in later books they were stuck up, rude, and thought they were just SO much better than the Fae in this world. But for as much of a disappoint as ACOFAS was it did redeem these characters a little bit for me. After suffering through the novella I could at least tolerate the siblings. The three girls are so different and I can never understand anything they do or why Nesta prefers Elain to Feyre (and so on). I hope the future books set in this world dive into these characters more.
5. Prim and Katniss from The Hunger Games
This trilogy has always had a special place in my heart, since the did get my into reading after all. Before I even had read these books I knew about the iconic moment where Katniss volunteered for Prim. It broke my heart and is one of the reasons I decided to go ahead and read these books. I wish these two had more sisterly interactions in these stories, but the time they were together always so precious. They loved each other so much and their fight to survive for each othewas extremely bittersweet.
6. The Weasleys from the Harry Potter series
I don’t think there are any readers out there that don’t love the Weasleys. The mischief of the twins, Ron’s dorkability, Ginnie’s sass. They were the perfect storm of siblings that really captured what having a huge family was like. Their chaotic games well reflected what it’s like to live with so many siblings. Even in the details (like what Ron sees in the mirror of desire) you can see how this family has affected and shaped the members of it.
Those are all my favorite book siblings! Share some of yours in the comments, I’m always looking for some recommendations.
