I’m not much of a “write a review just after reading a book” type of person, but here I am. I finished A Map For Wrecked Girls on audio book about ten minutes ago and I am very overwhelmed with a lot of feelings. The book wasn’t amazing but it also wasn’t awful. There were a lot of things that made the book hard to get through but other things that had me wishing audio books went faster than double speed.
The book is about two sisters and a boy who get stuck on an island with no way to get to safety. It mixes a classic contemporary story with survival and adrenaline.
I had a hard time dealing with the characters in this book. I didn’t care much for any of them and when bad things happened to them I didn’t feel sorry for them. Yes, the situation in the story was awful and I couldn’t imagine that. But the book really didn’t make me care. I wasn’t praying for the characters, the story probably would have been more interesting and heartbreaking if one of them actually died. Henri annoyed me to no end, everything she did as stupid and put everyone a closer to death. I understand why she acted as she did, since it’s all explained in the book, but it just felt reckless and hurt to read. Emma wasn’t particularly interesting, her entire life revolved around Henri. She had no real hobbies and her personality fell flat for me. Alex was the stories only good character. He was the perfect gray character, he had issues with drugs and crime yet was sweet, He was humorous and strong, overall Alex was the only character in this story that I didn’t want to punch in the face.
The book flips between two different times at every chapter. One side follows the present where everyone is stuck on an island and the other starts from six months before the ship wreck and goes all the way down to a day before the accident. The entire past story was all building up to this great bad thing that Emma did that would somehow explain why Henri was being a complete and utter brat in the face of death. Are you ready for this? For the big reveal? Well, first of all spoiler alert. Anyways the big thing Emma did was……. She told her parents that her older sister was sleeping with a teacher. Wait, pause. Oh my gosh, how dare she?!?!?!?!
If you can’t tell, that was mostly sarcastic. I felt like this “ultimate betrayal” was not reason enough for Henri to be such a brat the entire time they were on the island. Ughh, this frustrated me and is still gnawing away on my brains. I mean I can understand why it would be upsetting since the entire school found out, but really, in the face of death you decide now it’s time to be petty?
On the bright side the book was quick and a good enough book. It’s more of a guilty pleasure sort of book that comes with some classic contemporary tropes and a mediocre romance. The entire book was full of the girl who was pretty but didn’t think she was and a fiery romance that lacked sexual tension in every possible way.
Overall this book didn’t suck, but it really wasn’t great either. I’ve read better and I’ve read worse. This is the type of book that I’ll probably forget about in a few months that will ultimately only be important for helping me get to my goodreads goals.
