The biggest tragedy in the book world is the lack of love being sent towards contemporary characters. Okay… maybe not the biggest but it’s up there. I can’t complain too much since everyone is going nuts for Peter Kavinsky right now but there are so many great contemporary love interests that need some spotlight too!
1. Owen Okita from Always Never Yours
The first thing to come to mind when I think of Owen is how much of a sweetheart he is! He always has other people in mind and just so nice to everyone. He cooks for his brother, does what he can to make his friends happy and doesn’t have a mean bone in this body. Let’s also not forget that he’s a writer! During the book he’s writing his own play and cute bonus fact: he always has pen smudges on his hands. He’s just such a marshmallow precious “must protect at all costs” kinda character and I love him!
2. Oliver from Shuffle, Repeat
I’ve always been one for the arrogant & flirty type of characters but my dude Oliver is that and so much more. Not only is he a huge flirt that takes everything as a joke but he’s such a good person deep down and I love it! He grows so much as a person during the story and has a precious soft side. He’s kind, listens to people and is always there to crack a joke. He’s so kind and keeps every conversation entertaining, I would love to jump into this world for a moment and just talk to him because his banter is funny.
3. Porter from Alex, Approximately
Although Alex, Approximately wasn’t my favorite book for various reasons I did love Porter’s character! He was a more mild version of the “arrogant” cliche character but with a lot more baggage. He has a great relationship with his family (which I love) and it’s mentioned continuously throughout the book. He has such great attitude and loves the world and people around him despite the terrible things that have happened. He’s a very quirky character with a taste for older movies and a heart of gold.
4. Frank from Since You’ve Been Gone
I need more people to go pick up this book so I can rave about Frank with them! Frank is forever in my heart for an endless amount of reasons. He’s a little awkward, has a great taste in music and he’s adventurous. From the little information we get in the beginning of the book to the end Frank grows SO MUCH. I just assumed he would be the nerdy cliche love interest but he was amazing and so forgiving. He is a huge gentleman that brings such a unique dynamic with him.
5. Darien from Geekerlla
I started off this book hating Darien with every ounce of my being. He seemed a rude and like a dull character. But after around halfway through I really began to enjoy his perspective and interesting take on the “hollywood life”. He’s a lot more of a rough character then I was expecting, he had a lot more flaws and rough edges than most what you would find in this genre but I grew to love him! He and his character development are reason enough to read this book.
