Synopsis:
“Ashlyn Zanotti has big plans for the summer. She’s just spent a year at boarding school and can’t wait to get home. But when Ashlyn’s father is arrested for tax evasion and her mother enters a re-hab facility for “exhaustion,” a.k.a. depression, her life is turned upside down. The cherry on top? Ashlyn’s father sends her to work with a cousin she doesn’t even know at a rustic team-building retreat center in the middle of nowhere. A self-proclaimed “indoor girl,” not even Ash’s habit of leaving breadcrumb quotes—inspirational sayings she scribbles everywhere—can help her cope. With a dangerously careless camp manager doling out grunt work, an overbearing father trying to control her even from prison, and more than a little boy drama to struggle with, the summer is full of challenges. And Ashlyn must make the toughest decision of her life: keep quiet and follow her dad’s marching orders, or find the courage to finally stand up to her father to have any hope of finding her way back home”
This was such a fun and perfect summer read! It was adorable, full of self discovery, and had tons of charm. I’ve never read a story set at a summer camp before and I’m glad that this was my first! It was incredibly atmospheric and a lovely place to find some escape. Overall, this was a really easy read! I consumed it in about one sitting and couldn’t put it down.
The characters in this book were a fun group to read about. I specifically enjoyed Ashlyn’s character development! Her bravery in this story was admirable. Then of course Hannah and Bax were adorable! I loved their little friend group and couldn’t get enough of it. I would read another book just about their summer adventures.
Although romance wasn’t a huge part of this book the one hinted at was pretty cute! Watching it not all come together hurt my soul (because I was anxiously waiting for something to happen) but it was written amazingly. It leaves hope ahead for this story which I really enjoyed.
If you’re looking for a fun summer read then look no further! No Place Like Here is a quick and fun read that is perfect to devour in the summer season.
Favorite Quotes
” I slipped my cold hand into Tatum’s. We sat that way, in comfortable silence that exists between best friends until the ice cream melted, and I could breathe again”
“I reread the poem aloud to myself, as if it was a prayer. ‘You are not responsible for the mistakes of others’ jumped out at me, and I repeated it. It seemed something worth remembering, so I opened my quote journal and wrote it down in slick black ink.”
“I had also spent a lazy afternoon with Baxter, just lying on the bride at the ropes course and listening to the stream beneath us, reading — him, a biography of Theodore Roosevelt, and me, the copy of Leaves of Grass I’d bought on our first trip into Sweetwater. It was nice to just sit near someone and say nothing and feel no pressure to fill the space with small talk. It was more than nice.”
