Synopsis:
“Mia and Jake have known each other their whole lives. They’ve endured summer vacations, Sunday brunches, even dentist visits together. Their mothers, who are best friends, are convinced that Mia and Jake would be the perfect couple, even though they can’t stand to be in the same room together.
After Mia’s mom turns away yet another cute boy, Mia and Jake decide they’ve have had enough. Together, they hatch a plan to get their moms off their backs. Permanently. All they have to do is pretend to date and then stage the worst breakup of all time—and then they’ll be free.
The only problem is, maybe Jake and Mia don’t hate each other as much as they once thought…”
I have officially found one of the most amazing YA contemporary romance books to ever grace this planet. Oh. My. Gosh. Fake It Till You Break It is a swoony and adorable story that makes falling in love with the main characters impossible. I loved this story to bits and it’s easily become a favorite book of mine! I went into this book with extremely high expectations based off the synopsis alone ( Fake dating AND hate to love romance are my favorite tropes ever) and this book still managed to go above and beyond what I expected. The writing was lovely, characters were hilarious, and the romance was sweet perfection.
I don’t think I can say “adorable” enough times while describing this book. I’ll try to quit while I’m ahead with overusing that word, but it’s hard not to when this book is just so adorable. The way the tropes built up the romance between Mia and Jake was so organic and fun! The development of their relationship felt very natural and I loved seeing these two characters change over the course of the book. Their banter and even possible flirting moments were hilarious and their relationship is written so well! Gah, it’s just so cute! They were constantly making me laugh and want to scream at the same time because the tension between them was, well … ADORABLE.
I was actually pretty surprised when I realized that the book is told in both Mia and Jake’s perspectives, but it was a nice element in the story. I really enjoyed getting to know both them and the unexpected depth in their characters made this a lovely contemporary that touched on slightly lightly on sadder emotions. I hadn’t been expecting much more than a pure fluff book but I thought the way the author added in their individual pasts to show who they are was brilliant!
I adored Mia and Jake. They each read very differently with different mindsets and quirks that made the story so much fun! I loved Mia’s sass and Jake’s wit. They worked well together and separately I thought they were well written. This is a bit of a random note, but I love the tiny memory moments these characters had. Sometimes during a chapter they would remember a detail about the other from their childhood and I loved it. The way Jenn P. Nguyen built these characters from their past up was masterful.
I truly adored this book. The romance, plot, characters, and everything else was perfection. It was such a swoony and cute read that’s easy to binge in one sitting (which may or may not have been exactly how I read it). The characters are hilarious, the plot is spontaneous and of course the romance is adorable. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who likes this genre or is even considering giving it a try. You won’t be able to stop reading this once you’ve begun the first chapter, I can promise you that.
