Synopsis:
“Original fiction based off the hit television series Riverdale! Based on the massively successful CW show, this prequel novel explores what the gang was doing before Season One. Why did Jughead and Archie have a falling out? What did Veronica’s life look like in the Big Apple? And how long has Betty really been in love with Archie? Told from multiple POVs, your favorite characters tell their story their way.”
REVIEW:
Reading this book made it so easy to slip back into the mind of a show I really loved! This quick read was a lot of fun to fly through and catch up with some characters I haven’t seen in a while. It was an interesting experience to read from their minds rather than watching it on the TV but I liked the change of pace.
This book doesn’t provide much information that isn’t already apparent from watching the show, and what was provided felt off at times. I loved seeing the life Veronica led in New York and seeing who she was before becoming the Ronnie we all know and love… but other character’s point of views weren’t close to what I expected. All of Betty’s story takes place away from Riverdale at an internship I couldn’t remember hearing about and her story felt like it didn’t line up at all with her character. For everyone else’s story I thought the author did a great job of getting into their heads and made it feel authentic. It’s easy to forget at times that these characters are so young (sophomores in high school) and I thought this book did a great job of capturing their true age and presenting them as they are.
One of my favorite things about this story was the formatting. Not every character tells their story the same way and sometimes other unique writing types will be thrown in the loop such as a text conversation. I thought this addition was really fun and brought the story to life! I especially liked how Betty wrote her story through her diary which really spoke to her character from the show.
Overall, this book was a quick fun read that was a fun way to reconnect with some favorite characters. It’s entertaining but doesn’t mess with any of Riverdale’s dark theme or reveal information that isn’t already well established in the show.
