Synopsis;
“Winona Clark hasn’t been the same for years. After numerous attempts to start fresh abroad, one phone call brings her back home to some harsh truths and distant, but never forgotten, faces. Yet, there is one face she never expected to see again—the face of the boy who stole her heart all those years ago. Finally ready to deal with her past, Winona attempts to confront her trauma and embrace the love she feels she deserves. With love comes secrets though, and when you open the door to the past, you never know what will come out, including everything you wish had stayed inside.
Nick Wilder can’t outrun his demons. Tormented by what he has lost and the things he has done, Nick does whatever it takes to extinguish the images of the girl who stole his soul all those years ago. On the outside, he’s a broody bartender, but on the inside, he is holding on by a thread. When the one person he never expected to see again appears in his living room, Nick’s world is thrown. Determined not to be affected by the woman who knows him best, Nick does all he can to avoid the ghost of his past. But could the one woman he so desperately wants to avoid, be the one to save him?”
I feel like this book punched me in the gut ten times. But in a good way. I stayed up until ungodly hours devouring this book, because who needs sleep when you can read this heart shattering story ?
Can we talk about how amazing the characters in this story are? They are some of my favorite NA characters to exist. Winona was sassy & independent with a softer side. She was such a strong protagonist who held my heart in her palm. Then there was Nick. I might as well be in love with Nick. He’s the broody mysterious stereotype but he’s also so precious. He’s one of those “protect at all costs” sorta characters. Together these characters were witty and adorable and SO SWOONY. GOSH. The flirting. The moments. My heart.
That being said, this book did destroy my sleep schedule. But it’s the type of story that’s worth staying up until 3am and being tired in the morning for. Plus, it’s such a fast paced story that I can guarantee you’ll binge it. It’s the perfect book to escape from the grasps of a demonic reading slump.
A huge part of this book making me exhausted in the morning was the amazing plot and development in this book. The plot flowed through so well and all the subplots helped build this book all the way through the climax. There was so much that happened in this story that made it feel more realistic and made the eventual development of the characters feel genuine.
The only “problem” I had with this book is the same one I had with it’s predecessor. I found it a little bit predictable. More than anything I just had a mild gut feeling that I knew what was going to happen… and it did. BUT It was so good and emotional! I was sobbing through the ending of this book because these precious little book characters deserved so much better!! It was breaking my heart.
This amazing sequel is even more of a reason for you to get this series. Plus it’s from an Indie author! I adored this book and I cannot wait to see where the third book takes this story.
Thank you so much to the author, Scarlett Hopper, for providing me with an electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
