After waiting what felt like YEARS for the sequel to Caraval, one of my favorite reads on 2017, I ripped through this book in almost a day. In fact I stay up until 4am to finish it. I was so exhausted in the morning but it was WORTH IT!
Non spoilery synopsis:
After the events of Caraval we pick up almost immediately in a new point of view; Scarlet’s younger sister Tella. During the book Tella plays through her own game of Caraval that includes a pretty great romance & a lot of new information. Through the book the world building develops a lot and the series takes off in a whole new way.
When I first heard that this book was going to be narrated by Tella I was less than happy. I couldn’t believe I would have to suffer through a book without Scarlet and Julian! But my quick judgement was very wrong as this book was amazing. I had a lot of fun reading in Tella’s POV. She was very different from Scarlet in almost every way. She was brave and never let her fears hold her back which made the book extremely interesting.
Then there was Dante. I really didn’t know what to expect from him when I started this book! In the first book he just kinda seemed like a huge jerk so I figured he would be the same in this book too. Instead he was a very different person, he really showed a whole other side of him.
Together Dante and Tella were PERFECT. I loved them just as much (okay, maybe just a little less) as Julian & Scarlet. They had really well written chemistry and I couldn’t get enough of them! Their romance really helped this book move forward and I’m honestly a pretty big fan of characters like them being all flirty and such. They were both so confident and different from Scarlet & Julian that their relationship was refreshing.
SPEAKING OF CHARACTERS. LEGEND. I thought in Caraval it was so hard to figure out who Legend really was but 1/3 of the way through Legendary and it was really obvious who Legend was. It went from being super hard to figure out to RIGHT IN YOUR FACE. So I would say that Legend’s identity is pretty predictable BUT I’m not going to spoil it because that is EVIL.
My favorite thing about this entire book was the fact that this book made the world feel real. It expanded on the magic system and developed more a world where more stories could occur which is the perfect lead for Finale. One of the biggest missing elements in Caraval was the world surrounding the game and the magic system so it was really nice to that have all developed out in Legendary.
Overall I loved this book and I thought it was a great sequel! Garber did a great job with Tella’s perspective and making this book a new and refreshing story.
