Sometimes after finishing a great book, it can be difficult to follow it up with something else you find enjoyable since there are tons of books at your disposal. I’ve seen tons of booktube videos and blog posts with the same idea as this one and I’ve always been interested in trying (and hopefully succoring) at recommending titles… so here we are!
The First Match
If you liked Shuffle, Repeat by Jen Klein then you’ll also like P.S. I Like You by Kasie West. Both books are adorable contemporary romance stories that share a lot of the same “core mechanics” that make them reasonably comparable. Both stories feature different large aspects that make them unique but they feature a lot of similar tropes that made me pair them together.
Similarities;
- Hate to love romance
- Main female characters who aren’t afraid to be bold or speak their minds
- Blonde jock male romantic interests (who have broken families)
- Takes place during the school year
- Slow burn romance
- Side character friends who exist for banter purposes
- Character growth
- Fast Paced
The Second Match
If you liked Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo then you’ll also like A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. Both stories fall in the genre of YA fantasy but are rather different. Six of Crows is a heist story with a “squad” of characters trying to achieve a goal while A Darker Shade of Magic is more of an adventure. But despite a lot of their differences, I’d say that if you enjoyed one then you’ll enjoy the other.
Similarities;
- Characters who aren’t very “friendly” (Matthias & Kaz from soc; Lila from ADSOM)
- A dark world with a constant eerie vibe (Ketterdam & Gray London)
- Subtle romance
- Characters who would do anything for each other
- A lot of moments where people almost die
- big books, but fast-paced
- HUMOR
- Characters with distinct appearances
- Lots of life-risking stunts
- Adventure
The Third Match
If you liked Save The Date by Morgan Matson then you’ll also like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han both of these YA contemporary books follow sweet main characters and have large family aspects. The main difference between the books is the span of time they cover (and the subject). Save The Date takes place over three days and follows the events of a wedding and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before takes place of a few months and follows the protagonists love letters getting out.
Similarities;
- Close families
- Large focus on family
- Dogs
- Kind female protagonists
- Self-discovery
- All the feels
The Fourth Match
If you liked The Problem With Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout then you’ll also like Faking Normal by Courtney C. Stevens both of these hard-hitting YA contemporary books cover difficult topics that may be sensitive for some readers. Trigger warning for rape & abuse. The characters in each book work on overcoming a past experience in their own ways.
Similarities;
- Families that aren’t perfect
- Character development
- Overcoming trauma/experiences
- A little bit of romance
- Hard-hitting
If you have any recommendations for me I would love to hear them!
