“June wants high school to end and real life to begin. Oliver is soaking up senior year’s glory days. They could have coasted through high school, knowing about—but not really knowing—each other.
Except that their moms have arranged for Oliver to drive June to school. Every. Single. Day.
Suddenly these two opposites are fighting about music, life . . . pretty much everything. But love is unpredictable. When promises—and hearts—get broken, Oliver and June must figure out what really matters. And then fight for it.”
This book was pretty adorable and gave me ALL the feels. I couldn’t stop reading this once I picked it up and wow!! It just gave me all those sweet gushy feelings that come with a well written contemporary.
The characters practically ran this story and their clashing personalities caused great banter that fueled a friendship that changed June and Oliver’s senior year of high school.
June was gloomy. And I sort of loved it. “unlikable” main female characters aren’t too common and I really loved that Jen Klein went with a more negative, strong headed and harsh character. Most contemporary books feature cookie cutter females so June was refreshing on her own.
Then there’s my boy Oliver who is so much more than the typical jock stereotype to be expected of him at first. I’m not going to spoil anything (because I’m not evil) but he turns out to be a lot better of a guy than you’d think who really cares about what people think of him and he genuinely cares about the people around him.
The car rides that force these characters together are adorable, banter filled and more often than not full of tension (mostly the angry kind). Oliver and June make all types of bets that dictate their car playlist and they both see each other in a sort of unfiltered light so early in the morning around each other that feels so natural and fun to read about.
Outside of the car rides there are plenty of adorable moments between the characters that will have you swooning. From “ice skating” to learning how to be comfortable around each other their chemistry had me swooning.
There were a few minor errors, and the side characters could have been fleshed out a little more. But overall this was a well written adorable contemporary that’s too cute.
