“Talking to other people isn’t Kate Bailey’s favorite activity. She’d much rather be out on the lake, soaking up the solitude and sunshine. So when her best friend, Alana, convinces Kate to join their high school’s podcast, Kate is not expecting to be chosen as the host. Now she’ll have to answer calls and give advice on the air? Impossible.
But to Kate’s surprise, she turns out to be pretty good at the hosting gig. Then the podcast gets in a call from an anonymous guy, asking for advice about his unnamed crush. Kate is pretty sure that the caller is gorgeous Diego Martinez, and even surer that the girl in question is Alana. Kate is excited for her friend … until Kate herself starts to develop feelings for Diego. Suddenly, Kate finds that while doling out wisdom to others may be easy, asking for help is tougher than it looks, and following your own advice is even harder.
Kasie West’s adorable story of secrets, love, and friendship is sure to win over hearts everywhere. ”
It’s no secret that I love Kasie West books, but I’d have to say this one was a little bit of a disappointment. It wasn’t the worst book I’ve read from her but it was pretty far from the best. The funny part of this is it seems like her newer books are somehow WORSE than her first few books.
West’s books are fluffy and fast paced contemporaries, and the same can be said for this book. Unfortunately I found the story a little boring, it was more predictable than normal and the chemistry between the characters wasn’t great.
Although the idea of this story sounded great it just fell short. Although Kate was enjoyable enough she was a flat main character who didn’t do much for me and her friend basically only existed for the tension of Kate liking her best friend’s crush. Diego was a sweetheart and I really liked his character but I didn’t feel like him and Kate had a lot of chemistry. And by that I mean I didn’t feel like they had much at all which was utterly disappointing.
I liked the family situation that Kate was in, with her aunts and uncles (with their many children) lived next door to each other but the family dynamic once again fell flat. Although her brother and cousin were large parts of the story I didn’t feel the type of dynamic of family was there, this story in general was lacking on solid relationships and the way people interact with different people.
The best things about this book was that it was fast paced and Kate goes through a lot of character development. A lot of the key points of a Kasie West book are there; a romance, a best friend or two that don’t do much for the story, parents that don’t care what their kids do, cute moments, and more. But all the good stuff just fell flat and as I read her books more the issues and unrealistic things are more coming into focus than all the feel good moments. If you didn’t know me, you’d probably think (based off this review) that I’m not a fan, which is not true. I love Kasie West books, this one wasn’t bad but it was a little disappointing. It had good in it, but I felt like the good was outweighed by the lack of chemistry and dynamics that really discouraged me.
