Obsidio is the third and final installment in the Illuminae files series co-written by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. I’ve been waiting for March 13th 2018 since I finished Gemina in October 2017. The day it came out felt so unreal because the story was finally in my hand, and I was more than willing for it to tear my heart out. And trust me, it did.
Synopsis:
“Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?
Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.
With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.”
Obsidio was much slower paced than the previous books in the trilogy. Things didn’t really pick up until closer to the end of the book. It wasn’t at all bad, but the beginning of the book was a little less action packed than I was expecting.
My only actual sort of complaint was that I didn’t feel like I got to know Asha and Rhys well enough. In Illuminae the book was focused on Kady and Ezra. Then in Gemina we got introduced to Nik and Hanna. Then in this new gem of a book we got Asha and Rhys, who were great characters! But they didn’t get enough time for me to bond with them. The other characters got entire books focused on them, with plenty of time for me to fall in love with them. But with Obsidio’s focus being split between Kady, Ezra, Hannah, Nic, Asha, and Rhy I felt like I didn’t have enough story about them for me to love them like I love the rest of the gang. I wish the book had been longer or Asha and Rhy had just been in the story a bit more.
The book was full of all the classic amazing things to expect in this series. The humor was just as good as the first books, better even. The ships were as cute as before, the family dynamics were much sweeter than before. Oh, and this book had me sobbing several times.
We once again got some of Hanna’s art in this book, more beautiful than what was featured in Gemina and even more heartbreaking. You’ll understand what I mean when you read it.
In the end, this book left me as a giant puddle of my own emotions because I just can’t believe there isn’t anymore books coming from this world. If you haven’t read this series than I will personally drive you to a bookstore, shove a copy in your hands, and help you buy it. It’s just that good. I’m not a huge fan of sci-fi books, but I adore this series. If this author duo ever decided to publish more stories together I would pick it up without thinking twice.

I’m so excited to continue on with this series! I’ve only read the first book but everyone keeps raving about the final one. Great review!

To be honest, my favorite in the entire series was Gemina! Nik and Hanna are by far my favorite characters. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
