Synopsis:
“Fans of Susan Dennard’s New York Times bestselling Witchlands series have fallen in love with the Bloodwitch Aeduan. And now, finally, comes his story.
High in a snowy mountain range, a monastery that holds more than just faith clings to the side of a cliff. Below, thwarted by a lake, a bloodthirsty horde of raiders await the coming of winter and the frozen path to destroy the sanctuary and its secrets.
The Bloodwitch Aeduan has teamed up with the Threadwitch Iseult and the magical girl Owl to stop the destruction. But to do so, he must confront his own father, and his past.”
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book.
After being pleasantly surprised by Sightwitch I went into this book with a lot of hope that I would enjoy it more than the last two books. However, it didn’t impress me as much as I was hoping it would.
What I did enjoy about Bloodwitch:
- Iseult and Aeduan’s relationship development. I love their unique dynamic and the new development in their relationship (wink wink)
- I really enjoyed Safi in this book… which was a nice turn of events! Before this book I had trouble connecting with her. However, I enjoyed the direction her character development took a lot.
- Aeduan’s backstory!! I enjoyed seeing his character more fleshed out and watching him develop so organically during Bloodwitch.
What I didn’t enjoy about Bloodwitch:
- One of my biggest problems with this story was the same as Truthwitch and Windwitch: the pacing. The story started out great and fast and exciting yet it was dragging so much in the middle that I ended up skim reading a lot of it because I was so bored.
- I practically screamed when Iseult and Aeduan split up in the middle of the book. I love them together (as can be seen in a previous bullet point) and was frustrated by their split plot lines. They were one of the main reasons I was enjoying the book and after this point I just enjoyed the story a lot less.
- Through all this waiting for Merik and Safi to meet again I thought their reunion was anticlimactic. I was hoping for more and was left disappointed.
- The world building still feels foggy to me. I don’t know if I somehow missed some details back in book one but there are just things about the world that still feel vague and undeveloped.
As you can see, my feelings are very mixed.
But, overall, I think the books in this series just get better as they progress. I love the premise of this series and the things I enjoy about it (mainly that slow burn Iseult & Aeduan romance) are enough to have me coming back despite the negatives.
